Favorites of 2022
One of the movements that I enjoyed seeing pick up steam is the concept of #buywellnotoften. Lisa Ing Marinelli coined this phrase (if she didn’t incept it, she certainly made it popular on Instagram!), and I’m a huge fan 🙂
There’s something so satisfying about bringing out a piece that you’ve loved for many years, and wearing it in a new way.
When I procure new pieces, I often think - “am I buying the best version of this, or will I keep searching for the one”? For me, the best doesn’t mean the most expensive - it means the ideal version of whatever it is I might be searching for - a slip skirt, a kitten heel, a black blazer. Too often I’ve found myself buying things that are “almost there” but not quite - which inevitably leads me to being not totally satisfied and continuing my search. My new year’s resolution for 2023 is to stop settling and wait for the right one 🙂
Taking a look back at 2022, there were a number of favorites that were new to me, but also a number that have been in my collection for some time. Here are the pieces that have been on heavy rotation.
Christian Dior black skort
This black wool/silk blend skort from Dior has been so versatile - I’ve dressed it up for a night out with heels and a Chanel jacket, and I’ve dressed it down with sneakers or sandals and a shirt. It’s the ultimate black miniskirt for me. From their classic collection. Runs true to size - mine is in 38.
Prada shirt dress
This chambray dress from Prada Spring Summer 2022 always seemed perfect for what I was doing each day. It went all around Italy with me this summer, and its lightweight swingy style made it so comfortable and chic. The fabric is great for packing because it doesn’t really wrinkle, and is super breathable.
Striped linen shirt dress
Can you tell that I love a good shirt dress? This one is from a small boutique on Burano island in Venice that sells linen clothing. I bought Wallace a shirt from the same boutique, and he loved it as well.
Chanel jacket and skirt
I love a Clueless reference, and this Chanel skirt suit from Spring Summer 2023 had major Clueless vibes. I wore the full set to a wedding, and wore the jacket and skirt separately for everything from an outdoor Jazz concert, to work, to dim sum. Runs true to size - I’m wearing a 38 in both.
Denim jacket
This Bottega Veneta denim jacket was such a surprise purchase. First Bottega piece for me, before being influenced by Morgan Stewart on a few more. Its cropped, oversized style made it easy to wear over skirts and dresses. Runs true to size, I’m wearing 40.
White sandals
These Alexandre Birman white sandals have been seriously so good. I bought them on sale at Netaporter in 2019, and they’re the perfect white sandal. The kitten heel makes them super walkable and they’re low profile so they go with pants, skirts, dresses, everything. I wish they’d bring back this style because there’s really nothing better. Why Alexandre Birman, why??
Black trousers
Tom Ford pants. Worn to countless work events. They have a great amount of stretch that makes them comfy enough to wear on the plane.
Below the knee black dress
Bought this Dolce and Gabbana dress on sale in 2017, and I always find a few occasions to wear it each year. This year, I had a dream about wearing it in Italy, so it came with me there :)
